ABOUT THE ARTISTS

Mark N. Brown

Workshop Description:

"Painting on Location in Oils and Acrylics"

"I like to use the landscape as a still life to learn perspective, layout, values, colors and textures. I will take advantage of our host's beach side estate and have my class paint the scenic Kalama / Kailua Beach area. I'll do a demonstration for about an hour to show how I would approach the subject. Then the student artists can attack the same scene or a different one. My students at this event will get a small original painting from me as an added bonus!"

About Mark:

Mark N. Brown was born and raised on Oahu and has been inspired by comic books artist like Jack Kirby to Renaissance artist like Michelangelo.

Always in pursuit to refine his vision, Mark has been leading life drawing session for the last 25 years, from venue's such as Chaminade university and currently at the Honolulu Museum school of art.

Sixteen years as a painting instructor for the University of Hawaii at Manoa Outreach college , Mark now teaches plein air classes on location every weekend, with a band of 20 dedicated roving artists .

Mark has taken his easel to Germany, Tahiti, France, Italy, Massachusetts, Vermont, Maine, New Hampshire, California, Nevada, , and every year since 2004 has represented Oahu in the Maui Plein Air painting invitational.

Workshop Description:

"Abstracted Figures in Loose Acrylic "

Learn to paint figures in expressive poses and explore the options of abstract interpretation with various acrylic mediums. The class will use clothed figure pictures for visual reference. The basics of lost and found edges and composition will be covered to provide ground work for future figure painting. The class is great for beginners and experienced artists. The class is a kick for landscape artists that want to get out of a rut or beginners that want to jump into acrylic painting for the first time.

I will be providing a canvas 11x14 and all the acrylic supplies.

I will also be giving one 8x10 print to each of the participants.

About Rebecca:

My artist Life started with years of watercolor classes and luckily some fabulous nationally acclaimed teachers like Carla O'Connor and Jan Ledbetter. Most of the initial lessons involved figure painting of gesture poses. I modeled for artists as well during that time.

I continued to focus on art as a career and taught art in a Catholic school in Virginia. Then the fun really began when I moved to Hawaii in 2009 and met many artists and fell in love with landscape painting.

When I started to paint Plein air with Mark Brown, it became a new passion. During my first years in Hawaii I painted the beautiful scenery all over Oahu and worked at a gallery which I eventually managed. During this time I taught private and semi-private art lessons. I slowly came back around to painting the figure in a fun whimsical way and developed a style that is recognizable as mine alone.

I think the process of learning is the most fun part of art. My history with art has taken me on a journey of painting styles. I have had so much fun learning, growing and changing as I continue to develop a personal style. I enjoy teaching the basics of painting so that everyone has the tools to develop their own style and take their own journey of creativity.

Currently I have work in several small venues, both North Shore and Kailua. I am busy developing three series but absolutely love painting the gesture poses of surfer girls in acrylic on canvas board. Color, composition and bold technique without inhibition, are what I love to teach. You can find my work at Kai Ku Hale in Haleiwa or online on Instagram at ArtofHawaii. I also have work in Cactus Bistro in Kailua and several other small venues.

Born in Hawaii in 1962, Patrick Ching has spent a lifetime teaching people about nature through his art. His most influential artistic mentors were the late Herb Kawainui Kane, and surrealist painter John Pitre.

After volunteering for many wildlife organizations Patrick eventually became a ranger for the US Fish and Wildlife Service at the Kilauea lighthouse on Kauai. He also lived for extended periods of time among sea turtles and monk seals on the remote North Western Hawaiian Islands.

In addition to being an artist Patrick has authored many award winning books including Sea Turtles of Hawaii and The Hawaiian Monk Seal. His latest book entitled "Honu and Hina" was illustrated with the help of many children, teachers and parents. It received the Hawaii Book Publisher's association's "Ka Palapala Po'okela" award for excellence in children's literature.

Patrick now lives in Hanalei, Kauai and owns Patrick Ching Art gallery in Princeville Center. He travels internationally doing art projects, painting workshops, and live painting shows to raise money and awareness for various wildlife organizations.
