| Inspiration | To do this painting of Duke took a lot of setup time. Starting early at 7:00 am, I dropped off my canvas and easel at the Beach as the beach boys watched it and parked about a quarter mile down the road at Kapiolani Park and I set up directly in front of the Duke Kahanamoku statue. There is a city web camera that's on a pole near the statue and I watch as everyone waves at the camera, saying hello to family, friends and relatives with shaka signs and banners. The painting flowed easily and was purchased off my easel by a doctor who lives in the condo on Kalakaua who watched the artwork's progress as he did his walks. I always tell people that I honor the state by not selling at public parks and beaches. He laid out cash on my picnic table palette which caught my attention, but I delivered the painting to him later. |
