Back to the top We think Mark N. Brown Plein Air Art class is great but don't take our word for it. Many of our students are glad to share their experience with us. Below are very recent comments/testimonials from our students to help show we offer one of the best art classes in Honolulu, Hawaii for over 16 years.

I am a returning student of oil painting with Mark Brown. Mark is a excellent teacher and very talented artist. He is not only kind and culturally sensitive, but he is patient and encouraging. He is knowledgeable and shares his passion for painting generously with us all.

I remember a lot about art lessons with Mark and all the amazing people I met because of his plein air classes. My favorite story of Mark was calling him mid-week to see if he was out painting so I could join him. He said I'm at Kapiolani park. I said mark, that's a huge park, where are you exactly' and he said that it would be easy to find him. I was skeptical but drove down the road and there he was with two full door boards on big metal stands and he was literally skipping in front of them ,painting them. His laughter and silliness along with his knowledge and gentle coaching has made learning landscape painting the most lovely experience of Aloha I could have imagined and also the most informative !! Mark, thank you so very very much for the wealth of knowledge you shared and your fabulous critiques and genuine Aloha.

I have just signed up for Mark Brown's 2017 Summer painting class, and wanted to re-state my gratitude and excitement for being able to continue my on-going education under Mark's knowledgeable and entertaining direction.

As a returning student (I've lost track of how many years I've been in his class), not only do I continue to learn useful techniques for both acrylic and oil painting (and drawing as well), but I also enjoy hearing about Mark's adventures that he experiences as a dedicated, full-time professional artist.

His love of Hawaii and his passion for depicting it's beauty and uniqueness is truly inspiring. His enthusiasm is infectious and he has attracted a group of perennial students like myself who have signed up for his classes year after year. I look forward to every class with great anticipation and wouldn't know what to do with myself if I didn't have those Saturday morning plein air painting expeditions.

Mark has inspired me to try to capture the flavor of Hawaii's people and their history and it is my continuing great pleasure to render some of Hawaii's landmarks in my paintings. I have included a painting of Kewalo Basin's Fisherman's Wharf and Haleiwa's Aoki Shave Ice store (sadly, now both gone). Robert Dusendschon

I look forward to taking the summer classes.

I was so grateful to be able to participate in the au plain air classes. I have owned several of your paintings and have admired your work for the past 16 years that I have moved to Hawaii. It was such an honor and privilege to have you as a teacher and be in such an inspiring class. It is a dream come true in my retirement. The class is such a positive learning environment and the students are also so supportive. I look forward to learning more with each class. Thanks for the encouragement to pursue my dream.

Plein air painting is truly painting from life. Living moving changing light could be daunting. Mark Brown makes it doable. He chooses locations and shows how to select a composition. He then demonstrates creating the composition while describing choices in , color, value. Going from student to student He has special ability to know just what information and guidance to give each person as needed in their level. Talented painter, gifted teacher he is kind, caring, respectful and professional. Mark has created an atmosphere of camaraderie and friendship. I have seen tremendous growth in those students who regularly attend Mark's class for he has given them the tools to bring out their individual essence. Mark Brown is a true Hawaii treasure.

I have totally enjoyed the experience of Mark Brown's plein air (painting outside) class. Upon retiring to Oahu I looked for other outside activities in addition to golfing and walking on Kailua beach. After taking watercolor painting and acrylic painting through the Honolulu Museum of Art School, I was introduced to Mark Brown and the plein air journey began. I joined his Saturday morning class and began oil painting at different locations around the island. So in addition to learning how to paint outside with oil paint/easel, we visit the most beautiful sites on the island. It just doesn't get any better than painting at a botanical garden, a historical site, or on a windy, sunny, beach with sand blowing onto your painting. It is so much fun that I also paint outside on Tuesdays and sometimes Thursdays.

Mark starts his Saturday class with a one-hour demonstration of painting on site. He is a fantastic painter/teacher and inspires and motivates both the novice and experienced painter. His demonstration of technique and nuggets of information are interspersed with a great sense of humor.

This will be my third year of attending the class and others have taken it even longer. It is not only a class but a gathering of friends and colleagues which make the experience especially rewarding. Many attendees now participate in art shows and sell their paintings. If you want to have fun and a great experience with plein air painting, Mark Brown's class is for you.

Thank you for allowing me the opportunity to add my thoughts about the Fall 2016 Painting on Location class.

It is a unique experience every week. First of all, you make newcomers (and old timers) feel welcome in your typically humble fashion. This allows each participant to relax and become an active observer of the essence of whatever we are viewing. We become immersed in the most absorbing activity I can imagine: painting outdoors, on location in the most breathtaking spots on earth imaginable. It sounds like a commercial but it's true.

You also tend to attract an interesting group of painters, which only adds to the enjoyment of the whole experience. Some people arrive with little experience, others with obvious training. You are able to give a nugget to every one. I particularly like the fact that you get around to all of us, and that we get to see each other's work at the end when we wrap it up.

Your endurance and cheery disposition make you a treasure among teachers, and artists, and I thank you for allowing me to paint with you.

I started painting with Mark Brown's "Painting on Location" class back in 2004 with the UH Continuing Education Program. I was an art major in college and always enjoyed drawing and painting. As a new-comer to the islands, I was always in awe by the spectacular landscape, ocean, sky and people of Hawaii Taking Mark's class became a pivotal point in my life as he inspired my dedication and passion for painting en plain air for over 12 years, now. He is a gifted teacher and talented artist, who is warm, kind and full of Aloha Spirit. He is extremely generous, supportive and always professional. His classes are wide ranging from beginners to seasoned painters. I've watched him conduct classes for kindergartners from Punahou school and teach retired seniors who joyfully participate at each session. Painting on location means that you travel all over the island to places that you may have never been to and experience them in a deep, meditative way by observation. I am deeply grateful for Mark's expertise, kind heart and inclusive spirit.

    Come paint and be inspired!

It's been a rare privilege to be a part of Mark Brown's painting class for the past 4 years and to experience the unique community of students and serious artists that he has created.

When we meet every Saturday to paint, we benefit from Mark's wealth of painting experience through lively demonstrations and anecdotes. His energetic and engaging style of teaching is full of his love of art and life and is truly inspirational.

Mark's personality energizes everyone in the class and he always has an encouraging word for each student, whether experienced or just beginning.

Mark continually gives us insights into his professional experiences, and has encouraged us to immerse ourselves in the larger universe of artistic endeavors by organizing gallery showings and sale events in a variety of community venues.

I would encourage any aspiring artist or art-lover to join this class and experience a unique and enjoyable learning opportunity

Mark's class has been one of the most important experiences of my life, offering great opportunities for learning the craft and meeting and interacting with other artists.

Because of the instruction of Mark Brown, I have grown as an artist to the point where I feel comfortable showing my work at galleries and events such as the Punahou carnival. I have made major progress in getting my vision from my mind to the canvas. Also, I have visited places in Hawaii that I've never been to before, even though I've been living here 38 years. In addition, the comradery of the fellow artists and the beauty of the locations, make for a wonderful experience.

Thanks for the opportunity to express my gratitude for being able to be a part of your plein air painting class over the course of the last 5 years.

I've truly enjoyed your knowledgeable teaching methods and have learned many techniques for creating good oil paintings. Your style is always encouraging and positive and even entertaining... you make the Saturday paintings sessions a real pleasure.

Above all, it has been hugely beneficial for me (and all the class participants) to learn from a dedicated, successful practitioner of plein air oil painting...this is a rare and precious opportunity that is hard to come by. I can't tell you how valuable your tutelage has been as I strive to become the best artist I can be...not only in mastering painting techniques, but also in following your example as an intelligent, sensitive and caring member of the community.

I look forward to many more years working under your outstanding guidance.

    Mahalo Nui,

Many people wish they could take a painting class but feel intimidated and just don't know where start. Mark is not only a talented and successful painter but he also has a gift for teaching and encouraging the inner artist in his students. His passion for plein air painting, many years of experience, and his genuine Aloha Spirit can't help but inspire. The class brings together a diverse and colorful group ranging from beginners to seasoned painters that learn from each other as well. Some of us have been painting in Mark's class for years not only because the learning never stops but because of the friendship and the joy of painting outdoors. You will set up your easel in places that you've never been to or haven't visited in a long time. It's good fun!

"I was in your class back in 2007 I think. I now live in New York City. I loved your class and gained many skills and greater confidence. I can still remember the peaceful feeling of painting with the class...if I lived closer, you would see me there! I think about how you told me there is lavender in shadows.... not so much in New York!
