The 2018 Maui Plein Air Painting Invitational kicks off February 17 through Sunday, February 25. 2018.

The Maui Plein Air Painting Invitational is a week-long art event. The 2018 event will be held Feb. 17-25, 2018. Watch 25 artists create inspiring paintings at the Lahaina Harbor Kick Off, Kapalua Bay Paint Out, and the Canoe Beach Quick Draw. Six opportunities to purchase original paintings. The week culminates with the ‘Art to Heart' Gala, the Artists' Aloha Reception and, the Artists' Farewell Reception -- all held at the Royal Lahaina Resort. Maui Plein Air Painting Invitational (MPAPI)

  • Saturday, February 17, 7:30 a.m. to 11 a.m. Kick Off Paint Out & Art Sale. Lahaina Harbor. Artists begin the event creating freshly painted paintings. Displayed for sale 11:30 a.m. until 1:00 p.m. in the Pioneer Inn's Courtyard in Lahaina.
  • Sunday, February 18, 10 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. Youth Paint Out & Reception. Registration required and open to 40 youth (2nd-12th grades). Create paintings from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. at Campbell Park, Lahaina. Student paintings exhibited at 2:30-3:30 p.m. at a reception in Snug Harbor Room at the Pioneer Inn. Awards given to 1st, 2nd, & 3rd and these paintings will be displayed along side awards given to MPAPI artists at the MPAPI Artists' Aloha Reception at the Royal Lahaina Resort on February 24, 2018.
  • Monday, February 19 , 6 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. & 8-8:15 p.m. The Artists' Mini-Painting Silent Auction is held in the Snug Harbor Room at the Pioneer Inn 6-7 p.m. with final bidding 8-8:15 p.m. Artists' small paintings, no smaller than 5"x7" and no larger than 8″x8,″ are treasures that the artists bring with them to the event. This is a well attended free event and all paintings sell each year.
  • Monday, February 19, 7 p.m. to 8 p.m. Art Lecture by Jean Stern, Executive Director of The Irvine Museum Collection at Univertsity of California Irvine entitled , "ARTISTS OF INFLUENCE, The Evolution of Art through the Ages." It will be held in the courtyard of the Pioneer Inn. This is a ‘standing room' only event. Plan to come early, view and buy art at the Mini-Painting auction, and locate your seat in the plantation style courtyard setting. Free and open to the public. No Host bar available.
  • Wednesday, February 21, 3 p.m. to 6 p.m. Afternoon Paint Out & Art Sale 6:30-8 p.m. This is another opportunity to see all of the artists in the same vicinity. The artists will gather in designated areas on the Montage Kapalua Bay property and Kapalua Bay to find inspiration in the afternoon light. A Hawaiian model is present for artists who may select to capture her image on canvas. The artists' 25 paintings from this day will be on display and available for purchase from 6:30-8 p.m. in the breezeway hallways surrounding the Cane & Canoe restaurant.
  • Friday, February 23, 9 a.m. to 11 a.m.Quick Draw Paint Out Hanaka'o'o Park (commonly referred to as Canoe Beach) & Vicinity sponsored by Mala, Honu, Frida's restaurants. This a timed event where artists have just two hours to complete a painting. The public has an opportunity to watch a painting being created from start to finish. This beach area is home to several local canoe clubs. Their canoes, along with surrounding beach, ocean, and island views provide for interesting imagery for the paintings.
  • Friday, February 23, 6 p.m. to 9 p.m. Art to Heart Gala and Art Sale. Come meet the 25 MPAPI participating artists, view their paintings, and take one or more home with you. This is an opportunity to own original paintings at affordable prices. If you have attended the event in the past, you know how much fun it is to see everyone positioning themselves to view the 125+ original paintings. If you have not attended, this is must attend art event. Seeing 125+ paintings in one location on Maui is pretty special. The ‘Art to Heart' Gala & Art Sale sponsored by Royal Lahaina Resort is a ticketed event. Tickets are $175 per person. To register for tickets please complete the Gala Registration Form. This event provides an opportunity for art collectors wishing to buy paintings priority viewing before the Artists' Aloha Reception the next day (Saturday). Patrons and collectors have remarked that they often don't get to see all winning paintings, whether unable to attend on Friday or that the collectors took the paintings home with them. Therefore, award winning paintings remain in the Royal Lahaina Resort Ballroom Gallery until Sunday to allow for the display of ‘all' winning award paintings (including the 3 youth award paintings from the Youth Paint Out on February 18, 2018).
  • Saturday, February 24, 10 a.m. -- 3 p.m. Artists' Aloha Reception & Art Sale provides an opportunity for the general public to view and purchase paintings. The artists will replace paintings sold on Friday night with new paintings. A highlight of the Artists' Aloha Reception is to view the 2018 award winning paintings in the Royal Lahaina Resort Ballroom Gallery. This year, the Youth Event award winners' paintings will be displayed along side the MPAPI award winners. All award paintings will remain in the Royal Lahaina Resort ballroom gallery until Sunday at which time collectors may pick up their purchase/(s). Other purchases may be taken at time of purchase. Light refreshments provided.
  • Saturday, February 24, 3-4 p.m. Artists' Panel Discussion with Q&A. Four artists will share their career journey as an artist. Life being a professional artist takes talent, discipline, and determination to always work on improving one's skills. Learn tips from some of the best. Free and open to the public. The Royal Lahaina Resort gallery in the ballroom will remain open until 4 p.m.
  • Sunday, February 25, 10 a.m. -- 3 p.m. Artists' Mahalo Gathering & Art Sale provides an opportunity for the general public to view and purchase paintings. New this year will be Grand Finale Mini paintings of Maui scenes. They are no larger than 8″x8″ and no smaller than 5″x7." This category of painting was added late in the process and therefore are optional paintings for the artists to consider creating during the Invitational. Come mingle with the artists, view, and purchase paintings. This is your opportunity to bid our 2018 artists farewell, safe journey home, and encourage them to live aloha. Light refreshments provided.
  • Sunday, February 25, 3-4 p.m. Art Enthusiasts' Panel Discussion with Q&A. Four experienced individuals that have welcomed art in their lives share their stories. Panelists include a serious art collector, a museum curator, an art school curriculum consultant, and a guest knowledgeable about the effect of art on the human brain. Learn what role ‘art' has played in their lives and consider why you would want to welcome art in your life. Free and open to the public. The Royal Lahaina Resort gallery in the ballroom will remain open until 4 p.m.

We look forward to welcoming the Participating Artists for the 2018 Maui Plein Air Invitational to the warm breezes and beautiful sunsets of Maui. Twenty-five artists have been selected to paint during the 9-day art event. Artists come from throughout Hawaii, the mainland USA, and Australia. Their works represent a wide variety of painting styles showcasing local perspectives. This year in addition to many artists that have participated in the past, we welcome five new artists to our event. Also this year, we are rolling out individual articles about each artist. You can view them in our Plein Talk blog, with the Meet the Artists category.
