  • 8/1/2022 - Showtime At Baby Makapu'u January
Inspiration: 'Showtime At Baby Makapu'u" was painted as a demo for the Plein Air Class at the University of Hawaii Outreach College. It is a non-credit class that I have been teaching since year 2000. I do a demo from 8:00 am to 9:00 am and show my fellow artists how I would tackle the scene. I have learned so much by instructing this class. I use a good saying, "When one teaches, two learn".
  • 7/25/2022 - Waimea Bay, Hawaii
Inspiration: "Waimea Bay" is probably the smallest version that I have done of this site. Before I used to think that the size of the painting conveyed power, but it has nothing to do with the size. It is being able to lock into the inner strength of a painting, it's mana. In the case of making sure it has strong bones (structure), value and character, I am sure big wave riders can say the same thing about the power of Waimea Bay.

  • 7/18/2022 - In The Shadows Of Diamond Head
Inspiration: "In the Shadows of Diamond Head" was started as a demo for my Saturday Plein Air class with the University of Hawaii at Manoa Outreach College, I returned another day to finish it and it caught the eyes of surfers who would check on my progress before they went out to get wet. After their surf session, they did double takes to witness the positive progress, of course, the comments were in surf talk, "that is sick" , "that is bad, awesome", "bitching", "you get 'em!", thumbs up in their eyes.
  • 7/11/2022 - Magic Island
Inspiration: Painted on Location at Magic Island Marina. This image had me flirting with stronger, bolder colors, and it made it pretty intense if you got up close, but when you stepped back, it seemed to work.
  • 7/4/2022 - Oahu Market - Chinatown - 2
Inspiration: Being half Chinese in race, my mother would take me to Chinatown in Honolulu, Hawaii to sample the food and culture. Seeing it now as a artist, Oahu's Chinatown is a great buffet for the eyes and senses!
  • 7/2/2022 - Hawaii Canoe / Paddling Art Collection
Mark N. Brown loves the Canoe / Paddling community and culture in Hawaii. The Hawaiian canoe is called "wa'a" or water craft and is designed to handle the strong ocean swells. The design of the Hawaiian canoes are unique to the islands, with designs focused more on functionality and is known to have excellent workmanship. In his Canoe artwork collection, Mark N Brown captures the many canoes and beaches that he has seen while traveling around the island. From Kailua to Haleiwa, view Hawaii's canoes from the eyes of a plein air artist.
  • 6/27/2022 - Kaiser Bowls
Inspiration: For an artist wanting to painting at Kaiser Bowls, we pray for parking. On smaller wave days, parking is easy. To pull off the 36" x 48" original, I went a day before my class on a Friday (my class was scheduled for Saturday) which gave me time to do an accurate drawing on the canoes to get the right perspective and angle. Kaisers has so many great characteristics and great energy so it's very easy to get distracted. I pride myself on how well I paint canoes so the ultimate compliment is when Anuenue steersman of 51 Molokai'i to Oahu crossings Nappy Napolean, would say, "Looking good, Bradah!" based on a good drawing, I felt good about the painting experience.
  • 6/20/2022 - Kualoa Ranch
    Ref. No.: 18459 ** Size: 24" x 36" **
  • 6/13/2022 - Kalama Beach
Inspiration: "Kalama Beach" is a spot where I learned to body surf. It was a time when my younger brother Kent (who is now a Lifeguard) and I would our fins, catch the bus and hope for good surf. We didn't need anything big, we were happy with a 2 feet set but it did get larger. Then we graduated to Bellows Beach.
  • 6/6/2022 - Three Tables At Pupukea
Inspiration: "Three Tables" is an area I liken to the wild North Shore. It has a power to it, but it also has a quiet nature. It's a great place to chill when the other well-known areas are maxed out with people. A good place to paint.

  • 6/1/2022 - Hawaii Hula Fine Art Collection- Hawaiian Hula Dance Art
Hula illustrates the stories and history of the Hawaiian culture in dance form and is often accompanied by a song or a chant. The dancer portrays the words of the song or chant in dance form. Hawaii Plein Air artist Mark N. Brown has had the pleasure of watching many hula performances and sometimes, he even captures the beauty of the dancer's movements, costumes and message through his artwork. View some of his artworks inspired by Hawaii's iconic hula dance.

  • 5/30/2022 - Waikiki Beach 2014 Miniature Hawaii Art Image
Inspiration: "Waikiki Beach" has to be viewed from a distance in order for it to come together visually. It's a lot of information to put on a small canvas but I don't want to reach for a small brush. There's a lot of energy going on at the beach and using a small brush would only diffuse that power.
  • 5/23/2022 - Lanikuhonua / Koolina
Inspiration: Painted on Location on the beach at Ko'olina with the Waianae mountains in the background midground of the rocky cove and incoming tide and a foreground of Mother and son at play.
  • 5/16/2022 - Kona Surf
Inspiration: "Kona Surf" was inspired by Lahaina Galleries as they entertained the idea of having me work with them at their Big Island Gallery supplying paintings. They loved the painting I sent them as a sample but they decided to seek an artist who was based in the Big Island. They are a quality gallery that I hope to work with one day.
  • 5/9/2022 - Olapa Sandy's
Inspiration: "Olapa Sandy's" was painted on the mid zone of Sandy Beach where surfing is permitted. Usually in the break, only bodysurfing is allowed but either way, they both get my respect. Olapa is used in Hawaiian Hula, as "in the style of" and the parade of warriors of men/boys, women/girls that take on the shore break is awesome!

  • 4/25/2022 - 2 Man Canoe Of Color
Inspiration: The "2 Man Canoe of Color" caught my eye as a paintable subject because it was dwarfed by all the larger racing canoes in Kailua, Oahu. Although it was smaller, it had a large presence and voice because of the space surrounding it and the other canoes were stacked visually against each other which became a blur, making the smaller one have a loud voice.
  • 4/18/2022 - Canoes At Kailua
Inspiration: painting featured in American Savings bank calendar 2000
  • 4/11/2022 - Lilipuna
    Ref. No.: 27752 ** Price: $3300 ** Size: 36" x 48" **
  • 4/4/2022 - Olomana Of Windward Oahu
Size: 18" x 24" ** Inspiration: Olomana of Windward Oahu was painted from the Heiau of Kawainui marsh, because of the remoteness of this vantage point of one of Mount Olomana three peaks, I can identify with the hikers that attempt this hill.

  • 3/28/2022 - Waimanalo Canoe January 2022
Inspiration: Painted on the beach in Waimanalo looking towards Kailua with the Mokulua Island on the horizon midground of the catamarans and foreground of a yellow Canoe sitting on a dappled sunlit beach.
  • 3/21/2022 - Colorful Cliffs Of Makapu'u
Inspiration: As I painted Colorful Cliffs of Makapu'u, I brought it back to the studio to touch up, and of course, a painting is never done, just abandoned, so I enhanced it. To grow in your painting you have to risk ruining it.

  • 2/21/2022 - Koko Head Nocturne
Inspiration: Koko Head was painted in full sunlight during a summer day and changed in the studio into a night painting as the moon appeared in one of the 2 sessions as I was finishing up my plein air work. There was a City & County of Honolulu maintenance crew at Kuliouou Park named Les was always an encouraging presence when he would take care of the grounds. His son was in the arts, and Les wanted to paint in my class when he retired. The fishermen would wade onto the tide pools for tako (squid) and most times reminded me of myself when I paint, like fishing was a singular pursuit.
