  • Hawaii Fine Art Originals By Hawaii Artist Mark N. Brown
  • 2 Man Canoe Of Color
Ref. No.: 21813 ** Price: $3300 ** Size: 36" x 48" ** Inspiration: The "2 Man Canoe of Color" caught my eye as a paintable subject because it was dwarfed by all the larger racing canoes in Kailua, Oahu. Although it was smaller, it had a large presence and voice because of the space surrounding it and the other canoes were stacked visually against each other which became a blur, making the smaller one have a loud voice.
  • Ala Moana - Jan 2016
    Ref. No.: 27747 ** Price: $1400 ** Size: 18" x 36" **
  • Ala Moana Sunrise 2017
Ref. No.: 28560 ** Price: $6000 ** Size: 48x60 ** Inspiration: This painting gave me a chance to capture a sense of place with Diamond Head and a lifestyle painting with the surfers, joggers, bikers, and swimmers who would walk the scene. I started the painting in the morning and took a lunch break then came back and worked into the afternoon and evening. I took the sunset colors and put them in the sky. During the summer there was more activity with the people in the evening. It was awesome!
  • Ali'i Beach Park
Ref. No.: 24032 ** Price: $1400 ** Size: 18" x 36" ** Inspiration: "Ali'i Beach Park" painting brings back great memories for me as I would do a lot of the graphics and signs for the Triple Crown of Surfing years ago and Ali'i Beach was the site of the 1st jewel of the competition. As I painted it, I saw more than what was in front of me.
  • Alkai Beach/ Seattle
    Ref. No.: 18467 ** Price: $400 ** Size: 12" x 16" **
  • Asian Garden At The Honolulu Museum Of Art
Ref. No.: 23640 ** Price: $SOLD ** Size: 36" x 36" ** Inspiration: The Asian Garden has always been a favorite subject and I obtained permission to paint in the garden from Vince Hazen of the Honolulu Musuem of Art school. I did it in two sittings and I will use this as a springboard to do other paintings in the gardens and the Museum.
  • Aukai Beach 2014 Miniature Hawaii Art Image
Ref. No.: 23480 ** Price: $100 ** Size: 8" x 8" ** Inspiration: "Aukai Beach" was done several years back and was a first for me in the small sized artwork department. This Kahala beach location is a popular spot. I look forward to using this study as a genesis for a larger painting. More...
  • Baby Pounders Surf Spot 2014 Miniature Hawaii Art Image
Ref. No.: 23538 ** Price: $100 ** Size: 8" x 8" ** Inspiration: Baby Pounders is opposite of Pounders beach and is a good surf break to body surf if your out of shape or just want to get wet without dodging waves. I did this mini painting prior to going larger on the Pounders beach painting.
  • Broken Color Of Sherwoods
Ref. No.: 21814 ** Price: $3300 ** Size: 36" x 48" ** Inspiration: Sherwood Forest is in Waimanalo, on the Widward side of Oahu and as I painted this painting en plein air, it was a 3-stake day. As I anchor my large easel with construction stakes pounded in the sand to brave the winds and rain squalls. A 4 stake day tends to have more sand and pine needles from the Ironwood trees in my wet painting, but its a small price to pay to paint from a scene that Dr. Beach rates as one of the top 10 in the nation.
  • Byodo In Valley Of The Temples
    Ref. No.: 18461 SOLD ** Price: $1800 ** Size: 24" x 36" **
  • Canoe Regatta At Heiea Boat Harbor
Ref. No.: 18408 ** Price: $2400 ** Size: 24" x 48" ** Inspiration: When I arrived at Heiea Boat Harbor at Kaneohe Bay, a canoe regatta was starting to set up. I captured the lineup before the paddlers got in, with the Kualoa mountains in the background More...

  • Canoes Of Kuliouou
Ref. No.: 23830 ** Price: $600 ** Size: 12" x 24" ** Inspiration: "Canoes of Kuliouou" was done during the day,and it's equally good to paint a nocturne here, as the area is quite a ways from a lit area, so the stars and moon are shining. I read how navigator Nainoa Thompson would test out his celestial navigation by putting lights in the parking lot to align the stars, which drew the curious police. But Nainoa being a natural teacher gave them a good learning lesson on navigation.
  • Chanters 2017
    Ref. No.: 28561 ** Price: $2400 ** Size: 36x36 ** Inspiration: Skilled Hawaiian chanters.

  • Chinaman's Hat 2 2014 Miniature Hawaii Art Image
Ref. No.: 23486 SOLD ** Price: $100 ** Size: 5" x 7" ** Inspiration: "Chinaman's Hat" was painted at Kualoa Park. The trees had neatly framed the focal point of Mokoli'i and it was begging for me to paint it. Some of the more interesting views were wiped away when the erosion of the sand caused some of the Hala trees to fall in the water. More...

  • Colorful Cliffs Of Makapu'u
Ref. No.: 23637 ** Price: $3300 ** Size: 36" x 48" ** Inspiration: As I painted Colorful Cliffs of Makapu'u, I brought it back to the studio to touch up, and of course, a painting is never done, just abandoned, so I enhanced it. To grow in your painting you have to risk ruining it.
  • Colors of Chinaman's Hat
Ref. No.: 23495 SOLD ** Price: $2800 ** Size: 36" x 36" ** Inspiration: Painting the "Colors of Chinaman's Hat" was done in three sessions on location. On two of the sessions, I was in my analytical artist mind, asking myself what shape, color and value of the object was and on the 3rd session, I let my hair down and just was intuitive and free. Aaaahhhhh, it felt great! More...
  • Dancers At Aloha Tower
Ref. No.: 34333 ** Price: $5500 ** Size: 48" x 60" ** Medium: Oil on canvas - Chunky Style ** Inspiration: What started out as a 12"x 24" smaller study grew into the 48" x 60" original oil. I wanted it to have that earthy archival Kodak Hula Show look and achieved it by using paper towels to brush in the paint in a rough manner and feathered later with a brush. I painted it from a photo I took at Aloha Tower Marketplace during a Hula Performance. Since I had worked at the Willows in my younger days, this setting made me remember the Kanikapila times.
  • Dancers In Motion - Jan 2016
    Ref. No.: 27795 ** Price: $1200 ** Size: 30" x 30" **
  • Diamond Head Dreams (Diamond Head From Kakaako Waterfront Park)
Ref. No.: 20461 ** Price: $600 ** Size: 16" x 20" ** Inspiration: This view overlooking Diamond Head was painted as a class demo for the Plein Air art class of the University of Hawaii at Manoa Outreach College. I wanted to teach my students that there is beauty everywhere, even in a industrial area.
  • Diamond Head Playground
Ref. No.: 23841 ** Price: $3800 ** Size: 36" x 60" ** Inspiration: "Diamond Head Playground" was done on location ten years ago on another canvas, which I sold. I went to the same location 2 weeks ago and the trees have grown so I couldn't see Diamond Head. I had to walk out to the Kapahulu groin wall and by going all the way to the end, I could get the similar view. I did a 12" x 24" study and did the larger one in my studio.
  • Fishermen's Wharf Glory (Fisherman's Wharf Restaurant in its Glory Days Location: Kakaako - Honolulu, Hawaii)
Ref. No.: 20462 ** Price: $1000 ** Size: 18" x 24" ** Inspiration: This Fishermen's Wharf painting was the first I did at this location. This place has a lot of history. It is surrounded by a nautical landscape, showing the harbor and other landmarks.
  • Fishermen's Wharf Summer (Location: Fisherman's Wharf Restaurant in Kakaako - Honolulu, Hawaii)
Ref. No.: 20459 ** Price: $800 ** Size: 23" round ** Inspiration: This round panel painting was painted as a demo for my University of Hawaii at Manoa Plein Air painting class that meets on Saturday mornings at various locations around the state. Fishermen's Wharf brought back good memories for everyone in my class, some artists even remember having the Turtle Steak.
  • Haiku Gardens

  • Haiku Gardens 2017
Ref. No.: 28563 ** Price: $2800 ** Size: 48x36 ** Inspiration: A very special place Mark love to paint.
  • Hala Tree
Ref. No.: 23638 ** Price: $2800 ** Size: 36" x 36" ** Inspiration: The Hala tree painting received a naturalistic style treatment, and it was easy to because of the subtle lighting on the 1st day of a 2-day paint out. But the 2nd day was intense, and revived it with light.
  • Haleiwa Boat Harbor Lineup
Ref. No.: 24031 ** Price: $1400 ** Size: 18" x 36" ** Inspiration: I painted "Haleiwa Boat Harbor Lineup" from the lawn of the Harbor Master's quarters and when I started at 8:00 am the water has a lot of reflections. Then the harbor starts getting active with the mariners and shark encounters that go by every 15 minutes. I just stay calm and steady, full steam ahead.

Ref. No.: 23487 ** Price: $100 ** Size: 5" x 7" ** Inspiration: "Halona" was painted from Sandy Beach and is connected to the Blowhole that shoots up as the waves come in the cove and water spouts when waves heights reach about 4 to 5 feet. More...
  • Halona Blow Hole
Ref. No.: 23644 ** Price: $2600 ** Size: 30" x 40" ** Inspiration: Halona was done in one sitting. There were times when the energy was flowing in me from the crashing surf to the rocks and it doesn't stop there, it was as if it was IV'd into my veins and I just transferred it to canvas. I have done ocean scenes before when the surf is small and so was it's presence, but I learn just the same.
  • Hang Gliders View Of Makapu'u
Ref. No.: 21812 ** Price: $3300 ** Size: 36" x 48" ** Inspiration: "Hang Gliders View of Makapu'u" was done Plein Air from the guard rail ramp and lets me have a great vista. I envy the hang gliders that fly overhead , even at my elevation there is much to marvel at. I paint by stepping over the guardrail onto a little grassy platform which gives me a little space between the busloads of tourists that want photos of the area and me painting away .
  • Hidden Kualoa
Ref. No.: 23839 ** Price: $1000 ** Size: 12" x 36" ** Inspiration: "Hidden Kualoa" was painted on a day when I had a lot of patience. When your painting the grays of the mountain when it's in shadow, then when the light opens the sky and shines on the mountain, it's as if nature was saying to me "Is that all the color you've got?" But its good to keep your cool and droll out a little color at a time, to honor nature and my patience.
  • Hula Dancers - Jan 2016
    Ref. No.: 27749 ** Price: $3300 ** Size: 36 " x 48" **

Ref. No.: 23636 ** Price: $3300 ** Size: 36" x 48" ** Inspiration: Hula Dancers #2 is a painting that shows the multi ethic race that make up the Hula troupe. I enjoy the figure as I have been drawing from the figure since High school. It's time to revisit this series.
  • Hula Dancers February 2017
Ref. No.: 28564 ** Price: $2800 ** Size: 36x48 ** Inspiration: A painting that shows the multi ethic race that make up the Hula troupe. I enjoy the figure as I have been drawing from the figure since High school. It's time to revisit this series.

  • Hula Girls Up Next
Ref. No.: 18460 ** Price: $3300 ** Size: 36" x 48" ** Inspiration: Hula Girls in Waiting has been grooming in my vision for awhile. I have been drawing from nude figurative models for over 20 years, and it's easier to paint a landscape, because of the lighting but I enjoy the behind the scenes look as performers set to hit the stage.
  • In The Shadows Of Diamond Head
Ref. No.: 21811 ** Price: $2800 ** Size: 30" x 40" ** Inspiration: "In the Shadows of Diamond Head" was started as a demo for my Saturday Plein Air class with the University of Hawaii at Manoa Outreach College, I returned another day to finish it and it caught the eyes of surfers who would check on my progress before they went out to get wet. After their surf session, they did double takes to witness the positive progress, of course, the comments were in surf talk, "that is sick" , "that is bad, awesome", "bitching", "you get 'em!", thumbs up in their eyes.
  • Into The Eye Of Makapu'u
Ref. No.: 21943 ** Price: $3300 ** Size: 36" x 48" ** Inspiration: Into the eye of Makapu'u was done totally on location, and with the help of sightseers who would stop by and ask to take a photo with me, I respond by putting a brush in their hand as they pose in action like they are painting along with me, as their spouse takes the photo, I try to step out of the photo to let them take control, and have the show to themselves, but most times, they want me alongside them, and they and I get a kick out of it, in one case, a women visitor starting painting on my painting , easily fixed, but Into the eye of Makapu'u I enjoyed painting the cliffs as evidenced by the thick application of paint, very juicy
  • Jump Rock Of Waimea Bay

Ref. No.: 23488 ** Price: $100 ** Size: 5" x 7" ** Inspiration: "Kahala Beach" was painted as I looked towards the bridge and the horizon. I caught the area before it became a hub for activity with sun bathers, joggers and their pets. More...
  • Kailua Beach Canoe
Ref. No.: 23492 ** Price: $3300 ** Size: 36" x 48" ** Inspiration: "Kailua Beach Canoe" was done out of sympathy for the small dwarfed canoe among the sleek giant racing canoes. What it lacked in size was made up with character as the rigging and it's hull told a nice story. Being close to Christmas, it reminded me of how Rudolph the Red Nosed Reindeer might have felt when he was not invited to play. More...
  • Kailua Paddler 2014 Miniature Hawaii Art Image
Ref. No.: 23476 ** Price: $100 ** Size: 6" x 6" ** Inspiration: "Kailua Paddler" was inspired by the year-round, 3 times a week, training that the Lanikai Canoe Club does. It's a great motivator to witness their dedication! More...
  • Kailua Play Ground
Ref. No.: 34334 ** Price: $3600 ** Size: 36"x 48" ** Medium: Oil on canvas - Chunky Style ** Inspiration: Painting on location on Kailua Beach looking towards Lanikai point. What stands out is the hillside home of Cosette and her mom Puna who has since passed. That home becomes the focal point overlooking the Mokuluas and at the base below is the Kailua Boat Harbor. Elaine is a artist with a flair for painting and decorating. Their house is a dream home and every corner has her magic touch. Bob is a engineer and has made incredible features in the home. Once, while house-sitting for them, I boasted to Elaine over the phone that I had done 10 laps in their pool, I later learned that Bob does 100 laps 3 times a week! The painting was done in three sessions and when I got overheated, I just dove in the pool to cool off. More...
  • Kaiser Bowls - January 2016
    Ref. No.: 27751 ** Price: $3300 ** Size: 36" x 48" **
  • Kaiser Bowls Friday
Ref. No.: 23635 SOLD ** Price: $2800 ** Size: 30" x 40" ** Inspiration: I enjoy painting at Kasier Bowls because of the activity in the area, and not always in the water. Despite the distractions, I tend to focus more on my work as everything else becomes white noise. Usually there is a color note of red with Mondo's Catamaran anchored just offshore, but he is leasing it to another company for now.
  • Kaiser Bowls January 2021
Ref. No.: 34281 ** Price: $3600 ** Size: 36" x 48" ** Medium: Oil on canvas - Chunky Style ** Inspiration: For an artist wanting to painting at Kaiser Bowls, we pray for parking. On smaller wave days, parking is easy. To pull off the 36" x 48" original, I went a day before my class on a Friday (my class was scheduled for Saturday) which gave me time to do an accurate drawing on the canoes to get the right perspective and angle. Kaisers has so many great characteristics and great energy so it's very easy to get distracted. I pride myself on how well I paint canoes so the ultimate compliment is when Anuenue steersman of 51 Molokai'i to Oahu crossings Nappy Napolean, would say, "Looking good, Bradah!" based on a good drawing, I felt good about the painting experience.
  • Kalama Beach
Ref. No.: 24038 ** Price: $1600. ** Size: 24" x 36" ** Inspiration: "Kalama Beach" is a spot where I learned to body surf. It was a time when my younger brother Kent (who is now a Lifeguard) and I would our fins, catch the bus and hope for good surf. We didn't need anything big, we were happy with a 2 feet set but it did get larger. Then we graduated to Bellows Beach.

  • Kewalo Basin Shadows (Diamond Head From Kakaako Waterfront Park)
Ref. No.: 20463 ** Price: $2800 ** Size: 24" x 36" ** Inspiration: I painted this right in front of the showers for the surfers as they paraded by after their surf session. Judging by their reactions, I think I did a good job. When they said my painting was "sick" or "bad" (surf language), I took it as a compliment.
  • Kewalo Basin Surfer (Surfer's Off Kewalo Basin - Location: Kakaako Waterfront Park)
Ref. No.: 20460 ** Price: $2400 ** Size: 24" x 36" ** Inspiration: All surfers have a favorite break and townee's talk about Kewalo Basin and what it was before. I enjoy listening to their stories as I paint.
  • Kilueau Lighthouse
Ref. No.: 24043 ** Price: $800 ** Size: 16" x 20" ** Inspiration: "Kilueau Lighthouse" painting was made possible by Guy Ballou who arranged our trip. • Koko Head 2014 Miniature Hawaii Art Image
Ref. No.: 23540 ** Price: $100 ** Size: 5" x 7" ** Inspiration: This Koko Head image is a study that I did for my students and it had all the character that I want to retain in a larger painting that was done on a 36" x 80" door panel. When I get to tight in my painting, I refer to this study.
  • Koko Head Nocturne
Ref. No.: 21815 ** Price: $5500 ** Size: 48" x 60" ** Inspiration: Koko Head was painted in full sunlight during a summer day and changed in the studio into a night painting as the moon appeared in one of the 2 sessions as I was finishing up my plein air work. There was a City & County of Honolulu maintenance crew at Kuliouou Park named Les was always an encouraging presence when he would take care of the grounds. His son was in the arts, and Les wanted to paint in my class when he retired. The fishermen would wade onto the tide pools for tako (squid) and most times reminded me of myself when I paint, like fishing was a singular pursuit.
  • Kona Surf
Ref. No.: 24037 ** Price: $800 ** Size: 12" x 16" ** Inspiration: "Kona Surf" was inspired by Lahaina Galleries as they entertained the idea of having me work with them at their Big Island Gallery supplying paintings. They loved the painting I sent them as a sample but they decided to seek an artist who was based in the Big Island. They are a quality gallery that I hope to work with one day.

  • Kualoa Cliffs
Ref. To appreciate this location, I setup behind the Lauhala trees to give it a Polynesian look on 36" x 48" original canvas, and pounded in metal stakes against my easel to brave any squalls coming through, it was a fun time.

  • Mokuli'i In The Shadow Of The Pali
Ref. No.: 23840 ** Price: $1000 ** Size: 12" x 36" ** Inspiration: As I start painting the B side of the island, I painted "Mokuli'i In The Shadow of the Pali" and was inspired and owe tribute to a great painter, Dennis Morton. He did a similar layout. Dennis was a 10-year apprentice to nationally known portrait artist, Richard Whitney. Dennis first exposed me to the valley of Kauloa Ranch and he did some Hercules-like paintings that are still ingrained in my brain. Awesome painter. Last I heard, he paints in Kauai and goes back and forth to Conn. Thanks Dennis!

  • Olomana, Hawaii - April 2015
Ref. No.: 23842 ** Price: $2800 ** Size: 36" x 36" ** Inspiration: "Olomana" was painted in 3 sittings. The first time, I was blown off the area by a series of strong winds. The group of women exercising (stroller strides) was seeing if I would stick it out, but we all left and I returned after getting my layout in. I used to pride myself on trying to finish in one sitting "Alla Prima", but I took the pressure off myself. Fellow Plein Air artist Mark Norseth would tell me, "Who says it has to be done in one sitting?" He was right. I also remember some of the laid back guys in high school would say "taaakkkeee ittt eeeaaasssyyyy!"

  • Queens Beach January 2021
Ref. No.: 34282 ** Price: $5500 ** Size: 48"x 60" ** Medium: Oil on canvas - Chunky Style ** Inspiration: Queens is a favorite location of mine and as Oahu started to open up again, I felt the energy to take on a 48" x 60" on location. I got to the beach by 7am and everything fell into place. The weather was good and I painted nonstop until 6pm and it felt right. The best part was the onlookers that kept me company. I was tired and packed up to leave carrying a wet painting, a back pack and a smaller French easel to mix my paints on. I left behind my larger easel for a 2nd trip but just as i got to my van, a warm and friendly skateboarder dropped that off to me with a big smile. Right on!

I like that as a artist, if you read the signs correctly then there are lead-ins to a painting like a railroad track to a destination. During the summer there was more activity with the people in the evening. It was awesome!

  • The 2 Birds Of Waimea Canyon
Ref. No.: 24040 ** Price: $800 ** Size: 16" x 20" ** Inspiration: "The 2 Birds of Waimea Canyon" was a enjoyable time when fellow artist and retired Colonel Guy Ballou would take Spencer Chang, John Dixon and myself to Kauai and we just painted for 3 to 4 days. Guy, because of his military service, would get us sweet deals at the Barking Sands Installation and we were with 15 minutes of the Canyon. Guy would assign everyone to a detail. I was in charge of finding good painting sites. Spencer handled directions and driving duties and John provided logistics. Guy kept us current and on schedule. When we arrived at the cabins, we drew straws for sleeping arrangements and we were a well oiled machine. Great times, thank you Guy!

  • Wailua Pioneer Farms Sunflower Field
Ref. No.: 23496 SOLD ** Price: $3300 ** Size: 36x48 ** Inspiration: Painting the Wailua Pioneer Farms Sunflowers was done in two sessions out of a need to capture the scene before the sunflowers wilted and were plowed under. The sunflowers only would bloom during a 3-week period and I thank Pioneer Farms and fellow artist Nani for coordinating our artist visit. Being the artist with the most experience, Nani and Linh Tang deferred to me. Should we paint up close or from far? I choose from afar, and did the mountains in the background with the Sunflowers in the mid ground. I later second guessed myself because I reasoned that the mountains would always be there, but not the Sunflowers. But when I returned for my 2 session, I got up close and personal to the Sunflowers and it all fell into place with this painting. More...

I sometimes sing a song that he liked to sing, "I'm living on easy, with a bottle of whiskey, I have no money to suit my honey." Ahhh the life of an artist!
  • Waimea Bay

The bay that day was calm, and the tree that fronts the tower has Mark's decorative touches with ornaments and a Santa hat. I used this in the painting that decorates the Hawaiian Isle Kona Coffee Christmas bags that come on store shelves in October thru December.

Ref. No.: 23833 ** Price: $400 ** Size: 11" x 14" ** Inspiration: "Waimea Bay" is probably the smallest version that I have done of this site. Before I used to think that the size of the painting conveyed power, but it has nothing to do with the size. It is being able to lock into the inner strength of a painting, it's mana. In the case of making sure it has strong bones (structure), value and character, I am sure big wave riders can say the same thing about the power of Waimea Bay.
  • West Maui Mountains
    Ref. No.: 18469 ** Price: $600 ** Size: 16" x 20" **
  • Winter Surf At Three Tables
Ref. No.: 24042 ** Price: $800 ** Size: 16" x 20" ** Inspiration: "Winter Surf At Three Tables" was alive with crashing surf, spray and white foam. It wasn't surfable or rideable but it sure was paintable!
  • Yokohama Beach
    Ref. No.: 18458 ** Price: $1800 ** Size: 24" x 36" **

ref no:24809
